Happy Gut, Happy You

Did you know that over 80% of your serotonin is created in the Gut or that up to 75% of the energy you use in a day is spent turning your food into energy.

Your digestive system is a bigger part of you than you think and in this article I will begin to explain how you can use it to your advantage.

The cells of the digestive system are called enterocytes. These cells can be easily damaged but are renewed regularly. If a damaged enterrocyte is not replaced with a healthy one then the wall of your gut cannot perform its function. It wont be able to transport molecules of food into the bloodstream, it will allow particles of food through the Gut wall (lumen) thereby causing autoimmune disease (leaky gut). The enterrocytes contain immunoglobulins which are our first line of defence against ingested pathogens and in an unhealthy enterrocyte the Immunoglobulins can't function. So we are less able to defend ourselves. We are basically immunocompromised.

Add to that the bacteria that need to remain balanced with certain levels of all the major bacteria becoming unbalanced allowing opportunistic yeasts and 'bad' bacteria to become prolific. This causes conditions ranging from yeast infection to actual mental health conditions.

I successfully treat clients with many varying conditions by strengthening their digestive system. I see it as giving their health a foundation to build on.

I do this by making their enterrocytes healthy and giving them easily digestible foods for a while until their able to eat many regular foods without upsetting their digestive system.

I frequently use stocks and soups that contain specific ingredients that feed the enterrocytes and give them what they need. It's amazing that giving those Gut cells what they need for about 5 days can see huge changes in the health of the client even before I start working on the condition itself and sometime the condition they came with clears up without a need for further intervention.

Some foods that help make a healthy enterocyte include orange vegetables like sweet potato, butternut squash and carrot as they are beta-carotene rich. This converts to vitamin A which is a basic nutrient they need a lot of. By the way this has a great effect on the skin as the skin cells are close cousin of the digestive cells.

I also use a chicken stock/bone broth and then will work on fermenting good bacteria in the clients digestive tract.

They then begin to make serotonin, improve their immune balance and digest vitamins and minerals from their food. If that isn't happening properly it is impossible for an ill person to become well.

As a Nutritional Therapist with a worldwide client base I treat many conditions. I use a proper functioning digestive system as a foundation on which to build the health of the client. I use skype to do this from my office in Curraheen in Cork, Ireland and also see many clients there.

If you have any health issue including digestion, inflammation, mood or skin disorders, insulin issues etc than my system is going to help if you are willing to give it a try. Have a look at my website and drop me a line or two. Leonard Murphy.
