Lower Back Pain Treated By Chiropractic Care

By George Lujax

Approximately 80 percent of the American population suffers from lower back pain during their lives. Pain can occur in all areas but lower back pain is common. An aching low back is a sign that something is wrong. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to make a connection to the physical source of the pain when X-rays and other tests do not reveal spinal abnormalities. Chiropractic treatment is commonly used to address pain in this area.

For non-specific pain in the lower back, the Royal College of General Practitioners recommend manipulation treatments such as provided in chiropractic care before drug therapy or more invasive treatment such as back surgery. This recommendation, published in the February 2013 issue of Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, indicates the importance of chiropractic doctors in low back treatment.

Pain confined to this area may indicate an issue with other areas of the spine. Chiropractic Doctors are licensed healthcare professionals who perform manipulation of the spine that involve adjusting the vertebrae. This helps to align the spine and restore mobility. Though many people visit a chiropractor only when they are in pain, some choose preventative care helps to maintain physical health. Chiropractic treatment is very safe over the long-term and it is cost-effective because it can eliminate the need for surgery.

Many people find stress is a cause of pain occurring in their lower backs. Suppressed emotional tension can make the body react causing a situation that eventually deprives muscles and nerves of necessary oxygen. Chiropractors help their patients understand the causality between stress and back pain and provide suggestions for handling negative emotions properly so patients can reduce exacerbations of pain in the lower back.

The low back must be able to rotate, flex, and extend. Unfortunately, too many of us remain sedentary for hours on end due to our occupations. Walking and gentle stretching, especially in the morning, may help reduce pain in the low back. Using cold packs, instead of heat, can also be helpful. This initial treatment can make pain more manageable until a chiropractor can be seen for more hands on treatment. Within 72 hours of this mild exercise, many episodes of back pain may subside but professional treatment is recommended for more comprehensive and longer-lasting relief.

Research regarding chiropractic care for low back pain is favorable. Increasing mobility as soon as possible and attempting to prevent the pain from returning are the best conservative approaches. Pain in the low back should not be neglected or it could lead to more serious problems that require risky and expensive invasive treatments.
