Advantages Of The Tummy Tuck Procedure

By Isaura Downey

Tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that is used to tighten the muscles of the abdomen and to make the tissues in the region firmer. It is also known as abdominoplasty. During the surgery, fatty tissues and excess skin are removed from the central and lower abdominal regions. Abdominoplasty is done to persons that have sagging tissues particularly after pregnancy or following major weight loss.

There are several types of abdominoplasty in existence today. The classification depends mainly on the extent of the procedure. The main ones are complete, partial, circumferential, extended and the high lateral tension. The larger the area being operated on, the longer the time required. Major procedures last about 5 hours and minor ones do no go beyond 2 hours.

The complete abdominoplasty surgery is one of the most commonly performed. The surgeon has to make to incisions to successfully carry out the procedure. One of the incisions runs from one hip to the other and passes through the pubic region. The other incision is made around the navel and aims at separating it from the skin around it. The tissues under the skin are exposed and tightened using sutures. Excess tissues of fat are removed by liposuction and the skin stitched back.

A partial abdominoplasty requires a smaller incision. Through this incision, the fatty tissues of the lower abdomen are detached from the overlying skin. The skin is further stretched downwards and any redundant parts cut off. Liposuction is also useful here as it also helps in defining the transitional zone.

When a complete abdominoplasty is done together with a lateral thigh lift, the procedure is known as extended abdominoplasty. A high lateral tension abdominoplasty is different from the other types in that tissues are stretched in the horizontal direction rather than vertical. This technique requires a lot of experience but yields very good results. Circumferential abdominoplasty is done together a buttock lift in cases where major weight loss is required.

The results of abdominoplasty are widely variable. The main determinants of success include, among others, the severity, the technique employed and the skill of the surgeon. After the surgery, one needs to avoid strenuous physical activity until they recover. They need to wait for up to 4 months for full healing.

There are several risks that may arise from the tummy tuck procedure. The commonest include fluid accumulation, skin changes, loss of skin, swelling and wound dehiscence. It is important to take proper precautions to prevent these occurrences.
